Home Energy Grants cut by 20pc under Better Energy Programme

Date Posted: Tuesday May 24 2011
You could say a slightly sneaky or underhand move by the SEAI as they close off the Home Energy Saving (HES) scheme and open the Better Energy Homes (BEH), in essence doing the same thing but reducing the grants available by 20pc. The SEAI will in most cases rightly point to reduced costs involved in getting the work warranting a reduced level of support grants but the homeowners who may have stopped their application to HES in anticipation of BEH will rightly feel aggrieved.

Homeowners to get grants of over 5000 euro

Date Posted: Thursday May 12 2011
Some potentially good news for Irish Homeowners from the Govenment's Job Initiative with the announcement that grants will be available to make their homes more energy efficient. Covering activities such as installing insulation, heating controls and utilizing 'greener' appliances, they should certainly help reduce the cost of heating homes. One other interesting proposed feature to be introduced is that any work could be paid for upfront by your energy supplier and homeowners then pay back over time. So we wait with interest for the full details from the SEAI on Monday and we'll have a full breakdown for you on iDevelop.ie

Bord Gais to help customers in arrears.

Date Posted: Thursday May 05 2011
Some news and comments from Bord Gais annual report - their turnover is up 12 per cent and have recorded profits of 120 million euro - which is of no interest to the average Irish Homeowner. However, they have once again highlighted that a rise in gas prices is on the way with news on the way in October. The area of immediate concern surrounds arrears, Bord Gais now employ a staff of 90 in credit control and have made provisions of 26.4 million euro in the last year for bad debts - this should not be confused as debt forgiveness as reported elsewhere or that costumers have had their arrears slate wiped clean, more that Bord Gais are continuing to work with customers to get all arrears paid but have made provision for bad debts rather than taking a large hit at some point in the future.

Over 8,000 switch electricity suppliers weekly

Date Posted: Wednesday May 04 2011
Having more than 1 option in relation to energy supply is a relatively new development in Ireland so it should come as no surprise especially in the current economic conditions that homeowners are so willing to switch in search of a better deal. With proposed price increases on the way the good news for homeowners includes the low numbers who have experienced problems switching (though it does happen) and the introduction by the CER of initiatives such as customer education campaigns, the provision of detailed consumer information, a cost comparison facility, etc to help making the right switching decision easier.

Planning cost 1,000 jobs, says group

Date Posted: Friday April 29 2011
A damning indictment of the Planning Process in Ireland as Spanish Wind Company decides not to set up in Ireland due to 'inconsistencies' in the Planning Process, worse again that they didn't even bother to apply! Further compounding the issue is the fact is that the Government views the Renewable Energy sector as a growing source of employment into the future.

ESB see the light with budget payment plan for those in arrears

Date Posted: Friday April 22 2011
'De-energised' is the new term being used by the ESB (soon to be ESB Electric Ireland) for people who have had their electricity supply disconnected. It's insensitive, impersonal and smacks of marketing speak gone bonkers, let's hope that the rebranding of the company doesn't throw up any further buzz terms to try and devalue what is a traumatic experience for those involved. On a brighter note, the ESB have now seen sense (apparently after some intervention by Pat Rabitte) and are allow customers in arrears access to cheaper electricity rates. There has been much less fanfare of this move as you have to 'opt-in' to take advantage.
