Introduction

We are just about over a severe “Cold Snap” but Met Éireann predicts another one is on the way shortly.

Yet many households in Ireland have already seen that they are not equipped to deal with such circumstances.

Plumbing in particular is substandard in many homes, which in turn can cause damage and destruction.

The aim of this feature is to give advice and information on dealing with the adverse weather and includes tips on making improvements to counteract freezing temperatrures.

Heating System Checklist

Test Run : Turn the thermostat to heat mode and set it to 80 degrees just for testing. You should hear the boiler turn on and warm air should blow within a few minutes.

If it's running OK, turn the thermostat back to its normal setting. If it's not running properly, you can try to diagnose it.

Depending on your level of experience, you can fix it yourself or you may need a qualified plumber or gas service engineer.

Seasonal Maintenance : You should service your boiler annually. Check our feature on servicing your boiler for more information.

Replace the Air Filter : Put in a new clean air filter. Check with your manufacturer for filter suppliers to match your boiler.

Fuel : If you have a propane or oil furnace, make sure to have your fuel storage tank topped off and ready to go. Check our fuel feature for more details.

Heating Vents : Clear obstacles to heating vents so air can freely flow.

Check for Carbon Monoxide Leaks : This silent killer can easily be detected with either an inexpensive test badge or battery operated alarm. Whichever way you decide, just please decide to protect your family with one of these units. For more info see our Carbon Monoxide feature.

Drain Your Plumbing System

Draining your water system can prevent pipes freezing. If you own a holiday home or are absent from your property over a short period, it makes sense to follow this easy procedure.

Draining the System

Draining the water system is a simple procedure. To drain the plumbing system proceed as follows:

  • Shut off the main water valve.
  • Starting at the top floor, turn on all taps.
  • Flush all the toilets.
  • Leave the taps in an open position.
  • There should be no water coming out of any taps except a possible slight residual drip from the lowest level tap as any remaining water in the pipes dribbles out.
  • That’s it, job done.

Charging the System

To activate the plumbing system and refill it with water proceed as follows:

  • Close the lowest level tap in the house.
  • Now close all the upper taps. Closing the taps allows air to remain in the pipes to recharge the air chambers you may have in your home's plumbing system.
  • Go back and open the main water valve to let the water back into your pipes.
  • Now, one by one, starting with the highest level taps, turn on the taps and let the air/water sputter out until only clear water flows from the tap.
  • You may see discoloured water come out at first, this is normal.
  • Open the shower taps.
  • Flush the toilets.
  • Once the water is running clear, turn off the taps starting at the highest floor level and work your way down through the house. You may have an occasional sputter the next time you use a tap but any remaining air will quickly be purged.
